 What is an Adaptogen?

An Adaptogen are plant derived agents that help to adapt the body or protect it at the cellular level from physical, mental and emotional stress. The term Adaptogen was coined by Russian Phytopharmacist Dr. Nicolai Lazarev in 1947 to describe a natural herbal compound  that helps increases the body’s resistance to stresses such as trauma, anxiety and bodily fatigue. Basiclly helping the person “Adapt” to the stress.

What are the Requirements  to be an adaptogen?

The three widley accepted qualifications are:

  • Adaptogens are nontoxic to the recipient.
  • An adaptogen produces a nonspecific response in the body of immune enhancement, an increase in the power of resistance against multiple stressors.
  • An adaptogen has a normalizing influence on physiology, regardless of the direction in which a stressor causes change.

What are the Unique Properties of an adaptogen?

Adaptogenic herbs are unique from other substances in their ability to balance endocrine hormones and the immune system.  They are the only natural substances able to help the body maintain optimal homeostasis.  They are completely non-toxic to the human body.
